Museu Antoniano

Museu Antoniano
Museums and Palaces
Close to the cathedral is the Museu Antoniano, a museum dedicated to the life of St. Anthony.
The Museu Antoniano is housed in the building where St. Anthony of Lisbon is believed to have been born. He is frequently also referred to as St. Anthony of Padua, being named after the Italian city where he died.
The museum contains various pieces of sculpture, engravings, paintings and ceramic objects alluding to the saint’s life, as well as liturgical instruments and a bibliography about the cult and worship of St. Anthony.
Next door to the museum is the Igreja de Santo António and, in front of the building, is a statue erected in homage to the saint. These are all places of great popular devotion, especially during the city’s festivities in June, with the saint’s birth being celebrated on 13 June, a municipal holiday in the city of Lisbon.
