The Macao Scientific and Cultural Centre is the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education’s public institute for research on Macao, Portugal/China and Europe/East Asia relations in the past and the present.
It has a Museum for educational purposes in the field of history and culture; it is the only museum about Macau outside of the People’s Republic of China and the Special Administrative Region of Macao.
It exhibits on two broad but distinct subjects. The first, on the Historico-Cultural Condition of Macau (16th and 17th Centuries) presents the latest results of scientific research about the History of Luso-Chinese Relations and the History of Macao in an accessible way that can be understood by the general public.
The second, A Collection of Chinese Art introduces various aspects of Chinese Art, Culture and Society from the Neolithic to present day through collections principally of terracotta, stoneware and china. It is the only systematic collection of Chinese Art in museological institutions in Portugal.
