Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Castelo
Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Castelo
Monuments
The Sanctuary is linked to the battles of the Christian Reconquest fought in the name of the Virgin Mary. Churches founded during this period - usually called mother-churches or parish churches - were normally dedicated to the Virgin. The sanctuary is located in the former castle which was destroyed by the Moors.
On August 15 of each year, a pilgrimage to the sanctuary takes place. Festivities are preceded by a solemn novena, and the procession then passes through the street of Coruche. One of the traditions associated with the event is the benediction of the town and the surrounding countryside.
