Parish Church of São Pedro - Trancoso
Located in the historic centre of Trancoso, near to the Church of Misericórdia and the former town hall and jail, the Church of São Pedro has a sobre exterior with 18th-century architecture and decoration.
The original church was built in the site in 1320, and at the time served as the seat of the mediaeval parish. In 1621, the Governor of Arms of the province of Beira, D. Álvaro de Abranches, commissioned the construction of the tomb of Bandarra, a shoemaker and poet who went down in the local history of Trancoso due to his soothsaying ballads. Almost a century later, around 1720, work began on the new church, which can be seen today.
Inside the church, in addition to the tomb of Bandarra, it's well worth seeing the carved woodwork altarpieces and the painted vaulted ceiling in the main chapel.
A prominent feature of the exterior is the Pillory, after which the square is named.
