Born in Manhufe, a village roughly 9 kilometres to the west of Amarante, where members of his family still preserve his birthplace, easily recognised by its crenellated tower, Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (1887-1918) died prematurely at the age of 31, although his death did not eclipse the extraordinary genius that can be seen in all his work.
Influenced by the artistic atmosphere of Paris, where he lived for a few years, Amadeo became an important pioneer of modern painting in Portugal.
