Just steps from the Tagus waterfront, Jerónimos 8 is a brilliant merging of the best of the Portugal's past and present. Located in Lisbon's historic Belém district, the 1940s building has been reinvigorated by locally-based architects Capinha Lopes and Associates. The revamp allows guests to experience the ornate gables, statues and reliefs of the nearby 16th-century Jerónimos Monastery while basking in a clean, urban-contemporary vibe.
Windows in the wine bar peer out at it and the other historical buildings outside, so guests sipping from bottles of coveted Bussaco wines produced for generations by the hotel owners' family can reflect on the city’s heritage while admiring the bar's rich savoury palette of red, white and brown. The wengé wood reception desk stands before a crimson wall, and guests pass to their rooms through brightly lit corridors carpeted in alternating stripes of browns and reds. But despite their proximity to the monastery, the rooms are anything but ascetic. Instead, they are snugly appointed in shades of chestnut, burnt sienna and cream. Each room has a pale marble bathroom generously bathed in natural light. Lustrous, dark chocolate hues are everywhere throughout the artfully crafted public and private spaces.
