Commissioned by King D. João V in 1732, this is considered one of the most notable feats of hydraulic engineering of all time, and one of the most unusual and complex water supply systems of the 18th century, with a remarkable total length of 58,135 metres.

The viaduct that crosses the Alcântara valley in Lisbon, comprising 35 huge arches, is 941 metres long and 65 metres high, can be visited from March to October.
