Monuments

Although the Igreja de Santo Estevão was first consecrated in the 13th century, the present-day building dates from the 16th century. It has a very simple façade with some interesting Renaissance features on the inside.

One typical feature remaining from the Renaissance style is the ample division of the church´s space into four arcades, as well as some architectural and decorative details, used in the arches that connect the body of the church to the transept and the chancel. Note the medallions with the figures in high relief and the "grotesques" carved on the columns (these are fantastic stone figures that take us back to a classical "Roman style" imagery). Mention should also be made of the Renaissance statues of St. Peter and St. Paul, placed in niches before the triumphal arch.

The overall effect produced is that of a work of great elegance and quality that justifies the inclusion of this small church in the guides to Renaissance art in Santarém.

This church is also known as the Church of the Holy Miracle, the name that is linked to a religious episode that has since become a matter of great popular devotion.
