Torre das Águias
Torre das Águias
Archaeology
Standing in the middle of the countryside close to Almofala, although now in a badly ruined state, is the Torre das Águias (initially a Roman Temple), which reminds us of the more distant mediaeval times when the Moors penetrated into this region in the course of their battles with the Christians, the lord of the manor was driven away and killed by the Muslims.
When his wife was informed of the sad event and the fact that the enemy was approaching, she called upon Santa Maria de Aguiar to help her when she had to jump out of the window. This was when the miracle happened: a charger passed by the window of the tower and bore the lady of the castle to safety.
On witnessing this miraculous feat, the Moorish leader was immediately converted to Christianity.
