Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Alcoutim
Built in the 18th century, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Alcoutim substituted a primitive 16th century construction of which only the main doorway still survives.
The scenic baroque stone staircase that provides access to the large churchyard also offers a magnificent belvedere over the town and surrounding countryside. The church has a picturesque appearance, typical of the Algarve, including whitewashed walls, the rounded dome of the main altar and the bell over the doorway, guarded by a storks' nest.
The 18th-century gilded woodwork altarpiece of the main altar and the statues - in particular that of the patron saint - make the hermitage well worth a visit.
