The Our Lady of Penha de França Chapel
Within the architectural diversity of the Vista Alegre Factory, this seventeenth century chapel, a national monument and artistic jewel, houses one of the most luxurious tombs in the region: the mausoleum of Manuel de Moura Manuel, bishop of Miranda and rector of the University of Coimbra. It was here he maintained his recreational farm.
The impressive statue that the bishop himself ordered from French sculptor Claude de Laprade features the prelate in full religious dress, complete with mitre, lying raised from his death bed. Also deserving of interest are a painting of the Tree of Jesse on the chapel roof and the tiling carried out by Gabriel del Barco.
