						Archaeology
The Mazouco Rock Engravings, discovered in 1981, represent the first ever open-air Paleolithic rock art site discovered in Portugal.
A few kilometres from Mazouco, you can find the Mazouco Horse, a rock carving made in schist rock just a few meters from the Douro River, created using pecking and abrasion techniques. You can reach the carving via a short, steep trail that descends to the banks of the Douro River. This site, along with the Domingo Garcia Area (Segovia, Spain), the Siega Verde Archaeological Site (Salamanca, Spain), and the Côa Archaeological Site (Vila Nova de Foz Côa, Portugal), forms a collection of important archaeological discoveries for the region.
