The Rocha Estate, on which you find Santa Catarina House and chapel, covers most of a peninsula on the Caia reservoir, within the Santa Eulália parish limits in the borough of Elvas.

Located on a strip of olive grove which juts into the waters of the Caia reservoir, the “Monte” (main housing cluster) of the estate commands a privileged position. Fashioned in the traditional Alentejo way, the newly restored Santa Catarina House is a simple, long rectangular building next to the smaller caretaker’s house.

Part of the Natura 2000 network, the property is excellent for nature-watching and includes some wonderful landscapes of rolling hills punctuated by ancient holm-oaks, in which partridges, rabbits, hares, ducks and storks live alongside different types of birds of prey, lapwings and bustards.

You may engage in canoeing, angling, sailing and windsurfing; and also nature-watching and trekking in the tranquil surroundings.

A comfortable and welcoming place. There is a very large living room, with fireplace, satellite TV and DVD, which gives onto an ample west-looking porch, with views of the lake (only 45 yards away), its banks and its islands and a dining-room. Both of these rooms are air conditioned.

In the vicinity, you may visit S. Vicente, with its typical chimneys, wander through the charming historical centre of Campo Maior, the town of the Flower Festivities, or visit its famous Nabeiro Wine Cellars designed by the reputed architect Siza Vieira. The ruins of the Ouguela Fortress are another interesting site. On a trip to Elvas, you may visit the fortresses, the Cathedral and the museums. Glance through the antique shops of Borba, before having lunch in Estremoz or else go on a spree to Spain and have a drink in Badajoz (only 20mins away). On the way, taste the rich and varied local cuisine and try some of the best Portuguese wines, produced here, in the Alentejo.

Breakfast, consisting of fresh squeezed orange juice, fresh local bread, toast, jam, honey, butter, cheese, ham, yoghurt, tea, milk and coffee, is served daily in the dining room until 12 o’clock. Other meals are available only under special request, but there are excellent restaurants within a 15 min drive. If you order ahead, we will prepare a picnic basket for your outings on kayak or on foot, with local bread and cheese, boiled eggs, fruit, mineral water and a bottle of local wine.
