Abílio Manuel Guerra Junqueiro was born in Freixo de Espada à Cinta in 1850 and is considered one of the greatest 19th-century Portuguese poets.
He studied Law at the University of Coimbra, where he began to make a name for himself as a poet, publishing highly successful works such as A Morte de D. João and Pátria. His poetry criticised the monarchy, the church and the corruption of society, gaining widespread recognition both nationally and internationally.
In addition to his significance as a literary figure, he was actively involved in politics, holding key positions following the establishment of the Republic in 1910, before passing away in Lisbon in 1923.
