Castelo de Nisa
Monuments
Only a few walls and the Town and Montalvão Gates remain of the old, 13th-century Nisa Castle, which evoke the town’s medieval past and its importance in defending the Portuguese borders.
Above the arch at the Town Gate, which is flanked by two half-towers, the old Portuguese coat of arms featuring five shields (prior to the 1485 reform) can be spotted, along with the municipality’s coat of arms. The Clock Tower, which was built later, stands next to one of the towers.
The Montalvão Gate, which features a depressed arch with no bases or pillars, is located in the historic centre, next to the Cadeia Nova (New Prison) building.
