Discovering heritage

Find the ideal setting to experience something special.

The valley of the River Douro is a magical place. After flowing past steep escarpments close to the border, the river gradually unveils the extensive terraced vineyards on its banks, shaped by humans over the centuries. It is in this region that the famous Port wine is produced, much appreciated all over the world.

Douro by Yves Callewaert

The trip through the Douro region can be done in different ways. By car, to be able to enjoy the scenery from the viewing points and visit the wine estates, by train, recreating the ambience of the early 20th century, or on a boat cruise, which can start or end at the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, where the wine ages and increases in flavour, at the mouth of the river and close to the Atlantic Ocean.

The river is an important link and a possible itinerary between three world heritage sites: Vila Nova de Foz Coa, close to the border, the Alto Douro Wine Region and the city of Porto. But there's much more to discover. These are places for finding out about different moments in the history of Portugal and a good reason to travel through the country discovering the cultural, landscape, intangible and gastronomic heritage, which UNESCO deemed should belong to all of humanity.
