The São Neutel Fort is located in the parish of Santa Maria Maior, in Chaves, and was built during the Restoration Wars, in the 17th century, to reinforce the defence of the region.

It has a star-shaped floor plan, with a double defensive line and an internal moat, similar to other fortresses of the time, such as the neighbouring São Francisco Fort.

This fort is remarkable for its imposing size and elegant details. Highlights include the armoured portal with an inscription about its construction and the Mannerist chapel of Our Lady of Brotas inside. The structure is made of granite, with sloping walls and well-crafted stonework, reflecting the military construction techniques of that era.
