MIAT - Museu Industrial e Artesanal do Têxtil de Mira de Aire
Museums and Palaces
The MIAT - Industrial and Handicraft Textile Museum aims to take visitors on a tour of the history of what was once one of the most important textile industry centres in the 20th century in Mira de Aire and Minde. The museum is located in the building that once housed the old "Dom Fuas" carpet factory and, later, the "Tapetes Vitória" factory.
In the museum, visitors can learn how wool was processed to manufacture carpets, blankets, cloth, and knitwear for artisanal and industrial productions. It also has a permanent exhibition featuring handlooms, hand-operated devices, equipment, and machinery used in the textile industry, accompanied by information panels.
A reconstruction of a tailor's workshop can also be seen, exhibiting utensils and machines used to make suits. The museum also has an audiovisual space located in the factory's former nursery/ childcare centre where visitors can watch a video about the phases involved in processing wool: shearing, washing, dyeing, carding, combing, and weaving.
