Núcleo Museológico do Mar
Museums and Palaces
The Núcleo Museológico do Mar was inaugurated on May 29, 2003, by the then President of the Republic, Dr. Jorge Sampaio. This museum unit was born out of the need - long felt - to recover and disseminate some of the main historical memories and fishing practices that are more identifying with the communities on the coast of the municipality of Figueira da Foz.
A sea of reasons invites the visitor to discover and interpret multiple human affinities with maritime reality, to the testimony of the courageous and arduous gesture that constituted cod fishing and other activities, natural resources and socio-cultural traditions. The encounter with the memories took place through the local collection and exhibition of important documentary (written, photographic and audiovisual) and oral records, of ethnological equipment and landmarks, revealing private and collective memories, of the identity of the different communities and their traditions.
The Núcleo Museológico do Mar, has been operating, on its ground floor, since 1 July 2013, the Buarcos Pole of the Pedro Fernandes Tomás Municipal Public Library. Specialized in the theme of the sea, this pole gathers and makes available for consultation the collection of the municipal library, namely children and sea history, as well as the bibliographic collection donated by António Ribeiro Azul.
Since July 18, 2015, the Núcleo Museológico do Mar has had a new space, the “Querer Saber” space , which results from the donation of the personal assets of Francisco Lacerda and Manuela Andrade Pinto , a corollary of a dedicated common professional life to teaching.
