Archaeology
The São Paulo Necropolis and Hillfort in Freixo de Espada à Cinta are places of great archaeological and historical interest, located on the pedestrian route of Calçada de Alpajares.
The round Hillfort, which is approximately 60 metres high, is an example of the defensive structures characteristic of the ancient Celtic peoples who inhabited the Iberian Peninsula from the 6th century BC onwards. Some sections of the old wall can still be seen here.
Right next to it lies the Necropolis, which dates back to between the 8th and 11th centuries. This small set of tombs dug into the rock, sealed with a lid or covered with stones and earth, provides important archaeological evidence of the period.
