Observatório do Lago Alqueva - OLA
Science and Knowledge
The Alqueva Lake Observatory (OLA) is the largest astronomical observatory focused on science dissemination, located in Monsaraz, Alentejo. It is situated within a protected area from light pollution, covering approximately 10,000 km², internationally certified as a Dark Sky® Reserve or “Starlight Tourism Destination.”
Visiting the Alqueva Lake Observatory, in the heart of the Dark Sky® Reserve, for a stargazing experience on a guided tour of the magnificent night sky of Monsaraz, allows you to enjoy a sky protected from light pollution, ideal for astronomical observations with high-resolution telescopes.
During the Astronomical Observations, basic concepts such as finding the North Star, navigating the sky, and identifying constellations are taught.
With the aid of high-resolution telescopes, it is possible to observe star clusters, nebulae, and distant galaxies with the help of professional guides specialized in astronomy and astrophysics.
