Museums and Palaces

The Atelier-Museum’s mission is to conserve, disseminate and deepen knowledge of the work of Júlio Pomar and foster debate around contemporary art, seeking to embrace the plurality of expressions to constitute the space. Acquired by the City Council of Lisbon in 2000, at the time an old warehouse, it was renovated by Álvaro Siza Vieira until 2010, when Júlio Pomar donated it to become a museum.

In this facility, the exhibitions are associated with the aesthetics of the space and the light that cuts through its volumes. Discretely integrated into the neighbourhood's architecture, the building is composed of two floors and has an exhibition area in the centre, two reserves and service areas; visitors enter through a patio. It also has an auditorium with capacity for 60 seats.

Partial exhibitions of the vast collection rotate, alongside a programme of practical and theoretical activities involving architects, artists, curators, thinkers and the general public. Also exhibited on a regular basis are loaned works that are considered inspirational in Júlio Pomar's artistic production.

The Atelier-Museum also hosts exhibitions of other artists, from his and other generations, both national and international, emerging and established, proposing a dialogue with the space and the work of Júlio Pomar.
