Templo Romano de Scalabis

Archaeology

Roman Temple of Scalabis
Some Roman remains were found in the course of work being undertaken for the rebuilding of a palace in the Largo da Alcáçova. These are in fact the podium of a Roman temple, a square structure measuring roughly 15 metres. The southern façade, 4 metres high, is the best preserved part.

The building was destroyed by successive rebuilding works throughout the Middle Ages. In the south-west corner, some archaeological signs point to the existence of the Cella, the name for the temple´s enclosure. Unfortunately, it was not possible to collect sufficient data for a complete reconstitution of the space. The archaeological finds made so far in this area have made it possible to date the monument back to the first century BC.
