Sanctuary of Santo Cristo do Senhor da Serra
This sanctuary was established in order to worship Christ the Lord. It has been the subject of pilgrimages since the earliest times. The present chapel, built in 1901, was built on the site of the former chapel. The existing building is a notable example of Portuguese Revivalist art in a Neo-Romantic style.
The decorated and ostentatious wooden panel of the Main Chapel is inspired upon the decorated panel by João Machado in the Old Sé Cathedral in Coimbra. The sanctuary includes a neo-Gothic altar piece with a statue of Christ, an eighteenth century stone crucifix, a seventeenth century Pulpit which came from the Old Sé Cathedral in Coimbra and ex-votos in the form of simple paintings.
The pilgrimage of Senhor da Serra takes place from August 15 to August 23.
