Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Carvalhal
According to legend a chest was found by the sea shore in Peniche. The man who found the chest, took it to the hermitage and asked the prior to open it. The chest contained a statue of Jesus which was displayed for public worship. The church was built in the second half of the nineteenth century, and is surrounded by woodlands. One of the bells dates from 1737.
The sanctuary was formerly known as the Church of São Pedro de Finisterra and is surrounded by a small house built in order to provide shelter to pilgrims. The courtyard includes a bandstand.
Various processions are held, on Sundays from July to September.
