Igreja de São Lourenço
Igreja de São Lourenço
Monuments
The 17th century Church of São Lourenço belonged to the Order of Santiago. The unadorned exterior contrasts with the decorative riches inside.
There are the carvings on the main altar, where it is possible to make out the Cross of Santiago, and on the lateral altars with their contoured baldaquins completed in gold and polychromatic sculpture. In the 20th century, the church was completely tiled with storied panels removed from the already defunct Church of Misericórdia.
This is certainly one of the best examples of decorative Baroque art to be found in Portalegre.
