Igreja Matriz de Borba

Igreja Matriz de Borba

Monuments

Close to the Town Hall, but outside the town´s perimeter walls, stands Borba Parish Church dedicated to Nossa Senhora das Neves (Our Lady of the Snow). It was founded in 1420 (as is confirmed by an inscription on a stone inside the church) by Frei Fernandes Rodrigues de Sequeira, the master of the Military Order of Avis. It was rebuilt in the 16th century, when the Mastership of the Order of Avis was brought under the Portuguese crown by the king D. João III.

On the church´s façade, the most notable feature is the Renaissance doorway made out of the locally quarried marble. The bell-tower was built later, in the second half of the 18th century, after the destruction caused by the earthquake in 1755.

The interior, consisting of a central nave and two aisles, is also embellished through the use of marble, which can be found in the supporting columns and the decoration of the side altars, as well as by the azulejos covering the walls, dating from 1650. On the left of the altar, on the so-called Gospel side, are the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso (Chapel of Our Lady of Good Birth), the Capela das Almas (Chapel of the Souls) and the Capela do Anjo da Guarda (Chapel of the Guardian Angel, which has since been transformed into a Baptistery). On the right of the altar, on the Epistle side, can be seen the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário (Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary), the Capela da Misericórdia (Chapel of the Misericord) and the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Chapel of Our Lady of the Conception).
