Monuments
The convent of Santa Clara (Saint Claire), feminine branch of the Order of Saint Francis, was founded in 1376 by Leonor Teles, wife to king Fernando (1367-83). It was built on the site of a royal palace. Originally gothic, it underwent major modifications down the course of the centuries, and particularly in the 18th century, with only the cloisters now remaining from the original building.
After the death of the final abbess towards the end of the 19th century, the building moved on from its religious purpose while retaining a benefactory dimension becoming home to various charity institutions. After purchase by Portalegre Municipal Council, it became the City Library in 1999.
