Monuments
Classified as a National Monument, the Igreja de São Pedro was rebuilt in the 16th century. Its façade has a Manueline-style portal with a decoration that shows distinct Renaissance influences, on which a shield can be seen with the coat of arms of Dom João III and his wife Dona Catarina.
The three-nave church has barrel vaulting and the upper choir has 18th-century decorations. There are also an 18th-century rocaille organ and tile panels from the 16th century (combinations of green and white), 17th century (diamond-tipped and carpet patterns) and 18th century (with motifs taken from engravings of that period).
In the right-hand side of the transept is the tomb of João Lopes Perestrelo, a nobleman from the court of Dom João II and a companion of Vasco da Gama on one of his voyages to India, who founded the entailed estate of Quinta do Espanhol (at Dois Portos). Next to the pulpit is the tombstone of Luís Mousinho de Albuquerque, who was killed at Torres Vedras in 1846 in the battle between the troops of the Count of Bonfim and the Duke of Saldanha.
