Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Fetal
According to legend various prodigious and miraculous events occurred here during the seventeenth century. After the apparition of the Virgin to a shepherd a chapel was built. The sixteenth century building has azulejo wall panels, and the main chapel has a panel by the painter, Roque Gameiro. Two artistically significant altars exist in the church.
In 1791 the Queen D. Maria I authorized a free fair here on the first Sunday in October, the date of religious festivities. Many worshippers come to the site, especially during Lent, in order to chant a third of the Rosary. The main attraction of local festivities are the illuminations using snail shells filled with olive oil.
