Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora de Brotas
Located on a hill in the municipality of Mora, the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora de Brotas was an important religious complex in the 16th century. At that time it was surrounded by houses, designed for pilgrims. The church interior has 16th and 18th century azulejo panels.
According to tradition, the church was erected as a sign of gratitude for the survival of a young orphaned girl, after the death of her mother. Devotion to the saint dates back to the 16th century and was disseminated throughout Portugal. The first church built by the Portuguese in India was also dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Brotas and there is a diocese in Brazil with the same name. The annual festivity is held on August 15.
