Monuments
The church of the Hospital of Jesus Christ was built between 1592 and 1694 to house a brotherhood of the Third Order of St. Francis. Its patron was the archbishop D. Miguel de Castro.
This work is a typical example of a peripheral artistic expression, one that was slow to absorb the artistic innovations of the Baroque taste, which were already beginning to spread across the rest of Europe at that time. The façade is austere and sober, in keeping with the decorative programme of the Portuguese "plain style" of architecture, marked by three devotional panels symmetrically enlivened by windows and two side towers at the top.
In the church´s interior, attention is drawn to the 17th-century marble altarpiece in the chancel of the Gospel side (left hand side), which came from the chapel of D. Gil Eanes at the Igreja da Graça, and to the Mannerist paintings displayed on an altar to the left of the church, brought from the Igreja de Santa Clara during its restoration in the mid-20th century.
