The Matrix Church of Cacela was dedicated to Our Lady of Assumption. Built in the 13th century, after the Christian reconquest of the Algarve region, there is only the small side gothic doorway remaining from the original structure. The current church is dated the 16th century.
There is an impressive renaissance entranceway and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Mártires (Our Lady of the Martyrs), as well as the Manueline decoration of the interior chapters embellished with armillary spheres and ropes. The Church underwent modifications in the 18th century.
