Nossa Senhora do Monte Alto is a carmelite sanctuary. The access to the Sanctuary - Ladeira - is marked by various chapels of ethnographic importance.
The sanctuary was commissioned in 1521 by Francisco Pires of Arganil. The present building was constructed in 1796. The sanctuary includes eighteenth century panels, stones from Ara in the High Altar (1680), a limestone statue of Santa Luzia (fifteenth century) and a wooden carving of Santa Ana (eighteenth century).
Numerous pilgrims journey to the Sanctuary on August 15. The sanctuary is located on an attractive hill 500 metres above sea level.
