Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Angústias
Monuments
Built in the 19th century, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Angústias helps us to remember the arrival of the first settlers at the island of Faial. On a silver antependium, displayed on the high altar, we can see a representation of the first mass held on the beach and attended by the original settlers, whilst the coats of arms of their families are depicted on the ceiling of the chancel.
In the side chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of Fátima, are the tombs of Josse Van Huertere, the first captain of the island of Faial and his wife, Dona Brites de Macedo.
The church’s decorative features also include an 18th-century clay nativity scene originating from the school of Machado de Castro.
