Capela de São Pedro - Leiria

Capela de São Pedro - Leiria

Monuments

The Church of St. Peter is the last remaining example of the Romanesque architectural style in Leiria. It is of very simple construction with but a single nave featuring worked capitals and archivolts over the entranceway. Both these and the internal carved foliage are evocative of the medieval imagination.

Located close by the castle walls, the church was built around 1176 for worshippers living beyond the city's walls. Prior to the construction of the new Cathedral, the church was home to the Bishop and dedicated to Our Lady of Compassion.

After religious orders were abolished (1834), it served as both a theatre and a warehouse. Then, in 1896, Korrodi proposed its classification as a national monument. Restoration was to take place with work between 1933 and 1937 revealing some of the original features.
