Igreja e Convento da Graça - Torres Vedras

Monuments

Founded in the 16th century by the Calced Augustinian Hermits (i.e. the order that wore shoes), the monastery is now partly occupied by the Municipal Museum.
The church maintains all of its former splendour and is remarkable for its carved woodwork and baroque statues, particularly those from the first half of the 17th century.

The church is reached through the cloister, which is decorated with tile panels, dated 1725, that illustrate the life of Dom Frei Aleixo de Meneses.

The church is reached through the cloister, which is decorated with tile panels, dated 1725, that illustrate the life of Dom Frei Aleixo de Meneses.
The single-nave church is a monumental and well-lit building, with one of its most notable features being the large 17th-century altarpiece in the chancel.
Note also the wooden carvings of St. Gertrude the Great and St. Frances the Roman, which were typical 17th-century works. On the right can be seen a small niche in the wall with the tomb of St. Gonsalo, dating from 1422. In the main section of the church, there are four chapels on each side, containing fine examples of carved and gilded woodwork, images and tombstones with beautiful heraldic motifs.
There is also a panel of "carpet-patterned" tiles and, on the balcony of the choir, a valuable 17th-century ivory crucifix and two carved wooden pulpits from the 18th century, which was the period when the main improvements were introduced.

The porch also has some 18th-century tile panels, depicting the life of St. Gonsalo, who was prior of the original Augustinian Monastery in Torres Vedras, which preceded the present-day building
