Palácio dos Capitães Generais

Museums and Palaces

Captain-General’s Palace
In 1572 D. Sebastião gives permission to a group of priests to build a College for the Company of Jesus, a place that shows even nowadays the main goal of the dislocation of the Jesuits to this island: provide both a school and a religious upbringing.

In 1760 the Jesuits are expelled from the Terceira island and in 1766 Marquês de Pombal creates a new administrative, civilian and judicial organization for the Archipelago whose headquarters are in Angra and the representative is the General-Captain. The former College was transformed into a palace house during the stay of the General-Captainship.

It was twice a Real Palace: in 1832, in the reign of D. Pedro IV, the period in which the building witnessed the advancements of the Liberal Monarchy and in 1901, in the reign of D. Carlos I.

Nowadays the building has three specific uses: it is one of the official houses of the President of the Regional Government of the Azores; it is the house of the Vice-presidency administration and it also possesses a museum tour that can be visited.
