Casa-Museu Frederico de Freitas

Casa-Museu Frederico de Freitas

Museums and Palaces

The Calçada House was rebuilt in the nineteenth century, over previous constructions, by the Counts of Calçada. From the nineteen-forties on it was rented to Dr. Frederico de Freitas who lived there until his death in 1978. He left the contents of the house, in his will, to the Regional Government of Madeira. The Regional Government purchased the house and began the major works of adapting the House Museum, which allowed it to be opened to the public in the first phase in July 1988, showing the collections of sculptures, paintings, furniture, ceramics, glassware, metal and textiles in the atmosphere of the home of the Collector.

In March 1996 the major works of the second phase began, and were concluded at the end of 1999, with the installation of the collection of mugs, the exhibition of painted tiles, the auditorium and educational services, thus bringing to an end the program of the House Museum twenty years after the death of the Donator.
