New Series of World Heritage Guide Books
As part of the initiative by Turismo de Portugal (Portuguese Tourist Board) to promote itineraries that visit monuments and sites classified by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites, the third series of " World Heritage Guide Books” has been released. This time, the focus is on Lisbon, Sintra, Évora and Elvas.
This series comprises three guides, one about Lisbon, one about Sintra and one about Évora and Elvas. The guides suggest different themed itineraries in each of the four World Heritage sites. In Lisbon, the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower are city's foremost sites; in the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, the intention is to demonstrate the perfect harmony achieved between built and natural heritage; in Évora, the visit takes in the city centre; and in Elvas, visitors learn about the history of a city-barracks on the border between Portugal and Spain.
The guides are available in Portuguese, French and English, and can be purchased in book shops, at the classified monuments and online from the publisher, Porto Editora. They are also available as a free app for iOS and Android, made available by JiTTravel (https://jitt.travel/portugalworldheritage). The first itinerary, featuring Sintra, can already be downloaded and those relating to the other sites will be made available progressively over the coming weeks.
The first two series of the "World Heritage Guide Books" were dedicated to "The Heart of Portugal", featuring the Monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça, and the Convent of Christ in Tomar (first series); and the "North of Portugal", suggesting visits to the Historical Centres of Guimarães and Porto, the Cultural Landscape of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro wine region, and the Site of the Prehistoric Cave Paintings in Vale do Côa (second series).
You can see the brochures for the guide books in the section "Looking for...?" / "Brochures, Maps and Videos" on the Visitportugal website.
