Activities

Traditional boats of Tagus estuary are one of the most important cultural assets of its coastal communities. Its craft type diversity is the largest in Portugal and Europe, and one of the largest in the world. Among the various types we highlight: the “Fragatas”, the “Varinos”, the “Faluas”, the “Bote de Fragata”, the “Cangueiros”, the “Botes”, the “Botes de Pinho”, the “Canoas” and “Catraios”.

For hundreds of years these boats have been a fundamental mean of transport to Lisbon region, doing cargo and people transportation between the two sides of the river. They supplied Lisbon city, guaranteed loading and unloading of large ships from all over the world that docked at the Port of Lisbon.

In the late 60’s with the new road bridges these vessels entered into disuse which led to its abandonment. Formerly there were thousands, today survive about 70 boats, duly registered in the “Marinha do Tejo” - Living Museum of the Portuguese Navy.

Our company “Nosso Tejo, Lda” offers daily tours of 45min and 2hours in a “Bote de Fragata”, the ""Sejas Feliz"" (Be Happy), built in 1947 and recovered in 2014. Come and sail the river with us, visiting the city's waterfront, watching the two banks and learning a little more of this cultural heritage that we intend to protect and disclose. From the the river you can see: the Castle, the Alfama district, the Cathedral, the Pantheon, the Terreiro do Paço, the Belém Tower, the Discoveries Monument, the Electricity Museum, the Bridge 25th of April and the Cristo Rei.

Come admire the wonderful heritage of “our Tagus” (“Nosso Tejo”)
