Walking tours in the city. Guided tours in the historic centre of Beja.
Beja, a city with over 2,500 years, is the capital of Baixo Alentejo, considered the queen of the plain. Its foundation is much earlier than the Roman occupation and, therefore, is a city transverse to four civilizations. Pax-Julia is the oldest name that is known, it was assigned to commemorate the peace between Julius Caesar, Roman emperor, and the local inhabitants, the Lusitanos.
Located at the top of a plateau and dominating the vast plain of Baixo Alentejo, Beja is a very old city and rich in history. It was built in one of the best geostrategic places in the plain, which allowed it to be continuously surveillance and guaranteed better possibilities for defending against enemy attacks. Whoever is at the top of his Tower of Menagem can see everything that happens around the city, in a radius of many dozen of kilometres.
Beja is a city very rich in heritage, natural beauty, tradition, gastronomy, history, culture and “imaginary”. Its historic centre, very rich in monuments, deserves a guided tour that takes the visitors to meet the History, Symbolism and Messages of the various monuments.
For all these, there are many reasons to visit Beja and enjoy the famous hospitality of Alentejo.
