Espaço Memória dos Exílios

Exiles Memorial Space
Inaugurated in 1999, the Exiles Memorial Space preserves the memory of all those who found in Cascais and Estoril a "safe haven" during the various wars that devastated Europe in the 20th century, especially the Jews fleeing the Nazi regime.
The facility operates, symbolically, on the upper floor of the Post Office, a place where family news were given and received. Located in the centre of Estoril, it is an exemplary building of Portuguese modernism, built in 1942 and designed by the architect Adelino Nunes.
It houses a permanent exhibition consisting of archive documentation, photographs, period objects, reference material and a specialised library. With the aim of studying the presence of these refugees, the work focuses, especially, on the systematisation of the tens of thousands of refugee files, which were sent by the inns in the area to the regime's political police and have been preserved to this day.
