Bugiada e Mouriscada / Festa de São João de Sobrado
Featured Event
The Bugiada and Mouriscada, also known as São João de Sobrado, is a festival that takes place annually in the village of Sobrado (municipality of Valongo) on June 24. It is a recreation of a legend transmitted orally and based on the epic struggle between Bugios (Christians) and Mourisqueiros (Moors) for possession of the miraculous image of Saint John the Baptist.
During the day, the recreation of the legend is made concrete with countless dances and rituals that culminate with the Arrest of the Old Man, the most emotional moment of the day.
This festival includes about 700 participants, colorful costumes, distinct sounds and masks, making this one of the most genuine and authentic traditions in Portugal, attracting thousands of visitors.
