Mondego Walkways

In a territory with unique landscapes, such as Estrela Geopark, the Mondego Walkways allow you to get to know the region in a closer way, passing through previously inaccessible places.

The path, which is about 12 km long, starts at the Caldeirão Dam, which is considered to be km 0. It follows a bit of the Mondego River, which gives it its name, known for being the biggest river that runs entirely on Portuguese territory, from its source in Serra da Estrela to Figueira da Foz, where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

The walkways pass through the villages of Pêro Soares, Mizarela, Vila Soeiro, Trinta and Videmonte, where you can learn more about the environmental and historical heritage of these mountain villages. Along the path, which combines wooden walkways with trails and dirt tracks used by the inhabitants, there are other points of interest such as the River Beach of the Caldeirão reservoir, the Mocho Real Viewpoint (Miradouro do Mocho Real), the Pateiro Hydroelectric Power Plant, mills and ruins of old weaving factories, small waterfalls and suspension bridges. It should also be mentioned that it crosses two tributaries of the Mondego, the Barrocal Stream and the Caldeirão River.

The Mondego Walkways can be walked in three ways: the complete path, with your family (2 km between Videmonte and Açude dos Trinta) or with people with reduced mobility (accessible walkway with 2 km, between Vila Soeiro - Pateiro Hydroelectric Power Plant - First suspension bridge).

The entrance tickets have a symbolic price and can be bought online or at the Welcome Center in Guarda.
