This exhibition is a showcase of Maria Lamas' photographic work carried out during her tour of the country for the production of the book «As Mulheres do Meu País» (The Women of My Country), in 1947. The exhibition is curated by Jorge Calado, who, in a way, replicates in Torres Novas the exhibition project presented last year at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon.
Born in Torres Novas, in 1893, Maria Lamas was one of the most remarkable women of the Portuguese twentieth century. She was a writer, journalist, translator, editor, playing a fundamental role in the fight for women's rights and against the Salazar regime. Defender of Freedom, she was arrested by PIDE three times due to her civic and political activity and was exiled in Paris, having returned to Portugal even before the 25th of April 1974. He died at the age of 90.
