The Póvoa de Varzim Municipal Museum is showing the exhibition "Camilo e o Jogo na Póvoa Balnear" (Camilo and the Game in Póvoa's Beach Season), which is being held to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Camilo Castelo Branco and aims, above all, to highlight the experiences in Póvoa of this outstanding figure in Portuguese literature.

His visits to the city were on medical advice to bathe in the sea, a prescription for the ailments that afflicted and depressed him, but the gambling and entertainment of the crowded and luxurious cafés were a more powerful attraction for his restless spirit. Here we are transported to the atmosphere of Póvoa at the end of the 19th century, when the town's projection was made as much by its fishing activity as by the tourist movement during the bathing season.
