Lisbon's Blue Clay

Lisbon's Blue Clay
Events
The exhibition The Blue Clay of Lisbon presents a collection of earthenware from the Museum of Lisbon - Roman Theater, resulting from the cataclysmic earthquake of 1755.
In 1755, the violent earthquake that devastated Lisbon created a before and after in the archaeological record, keeping testimonies and experiences of the city under the rubble. The characteristic white and blue glaze was transformed into a black glaze, giving these earthenware pieces a very different appearance from the usual. The exhibition is divided into three sections: the Casa de Fresco, the middle floor of the museum and the archaeological area on the lower floor, where the predilection of the time for faience and the ostentation of wealth are discussed; the origins and characteristics of faience; the marks of the fire on the pieces and their archaeological contexts.
