Paintings from an Exhibition
Paintings from an Exhibition
Events
This concert by the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa features João Barradas on accordion and Pedro Neves as conductor. Works by S. Rachmaninov and M. Mussorgsky will be performed.
Modest Mussorgsky was inspired by paintings and watercolors to travel through an imaginary gallery with his music. It was originally with this solo piano piece that he paid homage to his friend Victor Hartmann. But the fantasy of "Paintings from an Exhibition" only truly blossomed in 1922, when it was transcribed for orchestra by Maurice Ravel. Accordionist João Barradas also plays Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3, one of the most difficult works in the entire piano repertoire.
