Like Franz Liszt with "Après une lecture du Dante", Paul Van Nevel created this program after reading "Hypnerotomachia Poliphili" (The Dream of Poliphilo) by Francesco Colonna (1432-1527).
In this work, Francesco Colonna describes Poliphilo's dreamlike search for his beloved Polia. The dream describes in detail all the aesthetic elements that shape Poliphilo's sensory universe: architecture, nature, flowers, jewels, literature and music, dance, ancient culture, physical elegance, ancient rituals and love, with all its pleasures and disappointments thrown up by Cupid.
